What Makes a Bad Word a Bad Word?

Can I just throw something out there?

What makes a word a swear word/cuss word/bad word?

I have some thoughts but first I want to hear from you.

What do you think?

Somewhat related is this Spongebob Squarepants episode called Sailor Mouth.  It’s hilarious.

I would have to say they are culturally defined on a slippery slope! If you think about what was considered TV “ok” when you were a kid and what is TV “ok” now it is fairly staggering!

agreed. maybe using such words as defined by webster and in the appropriate context, would/should/could be ok?

It’s clearly a cultural thing but I find it funny that we choose the 7 words or whatever to be the forbidden words while other things are perfectly acceptable. It’s kinda silly really.

    Tell me which is worse:

Calling a pile of poop a pile of sh*t

    or

    calling a person an idiot.

I’d say anytime you’re aren’t being loving to another person with your words it’s far worse than calling your butt an a$$ or something like that.

I’m not advocating dropping f-bombs, just thinking out loud.

I agree having a heart of love far outweighs the importance of having a “clean” tongue. If the people that sat around waiting to point out peoples faults and “dirty” tongues were more worried about having a heart of love maybe the Body of Christ’s PR dept. wouldn’t be in such a sad state of affairs!

You say your thinking out loud I say your THINKING IN PROGRESS!
