Intentional Reading Plan

I love to read.  Give me great book, a good beverage, and some sweet tunes, and I’m good to go.  If you’re not a reader, you’re really missing out.  I tell my kids all the time that reading books is like having a secret weapon.  Especially since fewer and fewer people are doing it.  Books help shape us, challenge our thinking, improve our mental capacity, increase our understanding, and teach us be discerning (hopefully).

While I read a lot, I’ve been an impulsive reader.  Just reading whatever tickles my fancy.  This year I’m taking the advice of a friend and creating a reading plan.  I’m selecting books that will help me grow in specific areas while leaving a little wiggle room for those “must-read” books that are bound to come up throughout the year.

Here are some broad categories that I’m looking at.  I’m about 75% done with my list of books for ‘09 and would love to hear your recommendations.   Look at the categories and let me know what some of your must-reads are.  Thanks!

Leadership

Theology

Church

Study

Biographies

Relationships

Communication

Life Skills & Other Books That Don’t Fit in the Other Categories

Relationships – I’m sure you’ve seen or already read these but I like Gary Chapman’s The 5 Love Languages, there are separate versions. I’d suggest the one for couples and I believe that there is one for men specifically along with others. In fact my husband has never read his version – you can have his copy! : )

  6. Jason says:

@Greg – I have to respect a guy who’s got Ravi, Godin, and CS Lewis all in the same list. Thanks!

@Amy – The 5 Love Languages are classic and probably deserve to be re-read. I’ve read the original and the one about children. Good recommendation. Big ups to you.

so i hear there is this great book by an EXTREMELY self promoting, shameless author. i think it is called mad church disease or something. i hear it’s incredible, but again, you have to deal with the author’s absolutely tasteless self plugging on blog comments and stuff. :)

  8. Jason says:

@anne – like i always say, “if you’re not self-promoting, you’re not promoting yourself.” or something like that. i’m actually looking forward to your book. seems like you’ve been talking about it for years. when’s it dropping?

  9. kazzles says:

Hey, off topic but loved your comment on Anne Jackson’s blog! Especially about the bro-mance thing!

  10. Jason says:
