The Mighty Hand of Justice
With my son in the car I’m cruising down the road with the radio going, sunroof open, and we’re chatting about all kinds of stuff. Life is good- until I see sirens in my rearview mirror. I got that “oh crap” feeling in my stomach looked at my speedometer and discovered I’m speeding. I pulled over, humbly accepted my ticket from the police officer, and moved on knowing my son had just witnessed his dad get busted.
The event led to a great discussion with Reece. Just the day before he had gotten in trouble with me and had to be corrected. Now he saw his dad do something wrong and watched closely to see how I handled my correction.
He wanted to see my ticket and he read aloud this phrase, “The City of Rapid City, SD vs. Jason Salamun.” For someone who loves this city, that sounds awful. I don’t want to be on the opposing side of my city, I’m pro-Rapid City. I hated the sound of it.
Reece and I continued our discussion and I explained to him that this ticket is like sin. When we screw up, we sin against God (and often others). Sin is bad and God is not. Our sin separates us from God just like my speeding put my name versus my city. And like the phrase on the ticket didn’t sit right with me, neither should sin sit right with a Christ Follower. The good news is that Jesus loved us so much that he paid for all of our tickets, past, present, and future- keeping us from eternal imprisonment. For that, we owe him our life and should live it loving him back. That clicked with Reece.
It sucks that I got a ticket and the subsequent fine. I’m guilty and I accept it. But I am thankful I could use this bad situation and turn it into a good talk with my son.
Oh, the mighty hand of justice.
