Questioning the Faith of Chris Sligh from American Idol

Chris Sligh

Here we go. We knew this would happen. Chris Sligh (a Christ Follower) is getting ripped. But it’s not the media laying the smackdown on the American Idol stand-out- it’s Christians.According to this article, some fellow Christians are upset about Sligh’s use of “secular” music.

Jonathan Pait, a spokesman for fundamentalist Bob Jones University where Sligh attended for several years, said: “We really are somewhat disappointed with the direction he has gone musically.”

What’s this guy talking about? Talk about taking the fun out of fundamentalist. Last week, Chris sang “Endless Love.” While I didn’t like the song choice- what’s wrong with that? Did the dude have a problem when Sligh sang, “Typical” by MuteMath? Do they even know that the band was actually on a Christian label?

Later in the article, a nightclub owner, where Sligh had played with his band, said this:

John Jeter, the owner of a Greenville nightclub where Sligh has performed with his band, said Sligh’s wholesome attitude and his faith come through in his music.

“It speaks well to the fact that it’s not all blood, guts and trash,” said Jeter. “Music doesn’t have to be filthy. You can have a good time in a good environment, and Chris is proof of that.”

Why is it that the most judgmental of the two is the Christian? Chris is truly representing what it’s like to be the “salt and light” to the world. A good guy, with a good voice, doing good stuff.

I say kudos to Chris. Not only is he rocking it on American Idol, he is showing that following Jesus isn’t about fitting the mold, it’s about breaking it.

Rock on Chris!
